Spinal cord injury to children
Will my child walk again like Superman wanted to?
Superman had to learn to walk before he could learn how to fly. Christopher Reeves acted as the Superman hero in the Superman movies. Although Christopher Reeves couldn't really fly, he could walk and run and ride a horse. Then he fell off that horse and injured his spinal cord. He could no longer walk or run or ride a horse. The Superman hero in him never gave up and he did everything he could to try and walk again.
Christopher Reeves died in 2004, nine years after his spinal cord injury accident. He never did walk again, but he put so much into the research required to give hope to others who also wanted to walk again after a spinal cord injury, that we can say that he did fly again, just like Superman. Whether he was Superman or Christopher Reeves, he is a hero.
You are angry, sad and hurt that somebody caused your child's spinal cord injury accident and that your child can no longer run around and do the things he always did before. Perhaps you don't want to talk about how you're feeling yet, but when you are ready to talk about how you feel, I'm a spinal injury attorney who is here for you to talk to and who will listen to you. Try not to wait too long, the sooner we chat, the better.
Your family and friends are shocked that your child had an accident, has injured his spinal cord, and can no longer walk. They sympathise with you, they do their best to make you and your child feel better, and they offer advice that gives you hope.
However, there is nobody who wants your child to walk again quite as badly as you and your child do, and you're not satisfied with only hope. You want to know more about what you can do.
As a spinal injury attorney who has dealt with many spinal cord injury cases in the more than 30 years I have been in practice, I understand that this is how you feel. Rehabilitation for children with spinal cord injuries is important and expensive. I will try to help you get compensation for the accident, which will help you pay for the treatment and rehabilitation that your child more than deserves. It's what a spinal injury lawyer does. What a spinal injury lawyer does not do, however, is promise that your child will walk again. I cannot do that. I am not a professional medical expert or a qualified medical expert. I cannot give you medical advice. Working with a spinal injury lawyer will, however, help put you in a position to get the best medical help you and your child deserve.
One of the most common spinal cord injuries that children suffer from is a cervical cord injury at the level of C3-C4 of the spine. It is usually a contusion that affects the brain circuit that controls the normal functioning of the diaphragm. As a concerned parent, you will learn a great deal about this respiratory defect, and although I'm not a medical expert and cannot offer medical advice, as a traumatic spinal cord injury lawyer I need to know all the details of this problem, and I do.
As parents, of course we think it is devastating if our child does not regain the ability to walk after a spinal cord injury. As you read this, I want you to know that after working side by side with rehabilitation experts, being in a wheelchair does not mean your child is a failure, or that you have failed to do all you can to help your child. I know it sounds terrible to state the truth but some parents will have a child who uses a wheelchair to get about, and these parents must come to grips with the situation. Somebody else caused the accident and of course you will be angry and hurt, but try not to let your child see these emotions.
I am not saying you must give up trying to find a cure, or stop praying or give up hope, but the more you communicate your disappointment to your child the worse he will feel about his spinal cord injury and about not being able to walk. Disabled children need to focus on doing the best that they can. Being positive around children with spinal cord injuries helps encourage them to be stronger and do more for themselves.
You should never give up hope, or show disappointment if your child fails to improve after rehabilitation and treatment methods such as weight supported training; functional electrical stimulation; energetic repetition of certain exercises; whole body advanced vibration exercises; chemical stimulation; and other forms of physical therapy.
In humans, there is a process of learning to walk by adapting, through experience. So, one of the big points about children with a spinal cord injury, and who are often still growing and developing, is about the efforts and methods of training them to walk. This walking takes the form of locomotive training.
After a SCI - or spinal cord injury - central pattern generators can generate a reciprocal gait pattern. The idea is that the locomotive training may be able to stimulate the locomotive pattern and improve mobility regarding the function of walking.
Will your child walk again? I cannot say, but we can work together to try to get compensation for rehabilitation expenses. Whoever is to blame for the accident, took away your child's ability to play with friends, kick a ball, and fly a kite. Your child may never get the chance to go dancing on a first date, or drive a first vehicle, but, your child does have you to help be brave and strong, to help soar high with their efforts, and to help fly like a Superman hero.
