Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation

It is an unfortunate trait in mankind that we feel, possibly due to the fact that we are able to reason, that it is our privilege to be able to ‘classify’ people, and ‘put them into little boxes’. We all know we shouldn’t do this, but, often unwittingly, we do just that.

This tendency, if it were encouraged could have disastrous consequences, particularly for persons suffering from Spinal Cord Injury. No two spinal cord injuries, although in the same broad category, are the same, and consequently, these injuries need to be carefully assessed before rehabilitative treatment can begin. As a spinal cord injury lawyer I need to be aware of the ramifications of various treatment schedules, and I need to be able to advise you regarding avenues open to you, and treatment options.

Once your spinal cord injury condition has been assessed and stabilized in ICU and a general ward, it may become necessary to look to specialist rehabilitative care. Spinal cord injury rehabilitation is possibly the most important decision you will ever need to make. Rehabilitation Centers do excellent work, and have as their goals, the eventual return into the mainstream of society, as many healthy well adjusted SCI patients as possible. The staff is typically devoted to their charges and dedicated to their careers, with many years of service at a particular center. Spinal cord injury rehabilitation centers do not only try to fix the damage as best they can, but take a holistic approach, aimed at improving the quality of life of every person in their care.

There are many rehabilitation centers across the United States, offering various levels of support for SCI in particular spinal regions. A typical highly respected center in Washington offers SCI patients a diverse range of services. The medical task teams comprise specialists in several fields, such as doctors, surgeons and nurses. Included in the team are social workers and counselors. Not excluded are physical, speech, and occupational therapists. These professionals combine their knowledge and skills, and ensure that their patients make positive progress, and are able to reach pre-determined landmark goals.

Spinal cord injury patients often feel neglected by society, and to disprove this, I want to mention that annual grants of many millions are allocated for research and development into SCI and how to improve the quality of life of SCI sufferers. There is, for instance, ongoing research being done into wheelchairs. This is the sort of thing I need to know, to be able to communicate with my clients, and to provide as detailed an overview as possible of what lies ahead for them.

There is for instance an emerging sport called Hardcore Sitting! This sport could be called wheelchair skateboarding, and is practiced at skate parks and BMX tracks! By SCI patients!

The key to spinal cord rehabilitation is education. A person newly diagnosed with SCI invariably goes into denial, and the staff of SCI rehabilitation centers accept it is their task to assist their charges return to society with a full knowledge and understanding of their affliction and how it will impact themselves, and those around them. A duty I took upon myself over 30 years ago was similar.
